About the APPG on Black Health

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Black Health is a cross-party parliamentary group committed to Informing Policy and Practice to Achieve Equity in Healthcare. The group is chaired by Paulette Hamilton MP and secretariat provided by the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN).

The APPG is committed to engaging with policymakers, healthcare stakeholders, experts, community organisations and other parliamentary groups to drive research, policy recommendations, and reforms. Together, we work to address healthcare disparities and improve health outcomes for Black communities across the UK.

The current work programme of the APPG is Funded by The Health Foundation & Theramex.

𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗚 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 – 𝗙𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁

𝘉𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦: 𝘍𝘪𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘴, 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯, 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦

CAHN as secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Black Health is delighted to announce the launch of our groundbreaking report: Breaking the Silence: Fibroids, Black Women, Time for Change. Our analysis was informed by 𝟱𝟬𝟬 responses.

This report emerges from our inaugural parliamentary session focused on reproductive health with a spotlight on fibroids. The session highlighted the lived experiences of Black women, the lack of UK-based research including Black women, and the urgent need for increasing awareness of treatment options in Black communities.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀

  1. 27% of respondents were not offered any treatment after being diagnosed with fibroids
  2. Over 50% experienced delays to diagnosis of at least two years
  3. 26% had lived with fibroids for more than 10 years
  4. Only six UK-based research studies on fibroids were conducted between 2014 and 2021

The 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝟭𝟭 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 focused on driving improvement for reproductive health. Read all about it here – download the full report: https://www.cahn.org.uk/fibroidsreport/
